BAYELSA STATE OVERVIEW:

Bayelsa State is a state in southern Nigeria in the Niger Delta area, Its capital is Yenagoa. The state was created in 1996 from some part of Rivers State. It got its name from the old Rivers State, as it was the tradition to use acronyms when naming the local government areas (LGAs). For example, Brass LGA was simply called BALGA, Yenagoa was YELGA while Sagbama was just SALGA i.e BA + YEL + SA = BAYELSA. The four primary dialects spoken in Bayelsa are Izon, Nembe, Epie-Atissa, and Ogbia. Like other states in Nigeria, English is the official dialect. The State has one of the biggest raw petroleum and gas deposit in Nigeria. The local population engage in fishing on a subsistence and commercial level.
